“David’s Reponse to God in Low Times”

Psalm 34:1-22

David was at his lowest point in his life when writing this chapter.  He was a dweller of dens and caves running for his life.  David did not let his circumstances get him down, rather he chose to go to God with his problems; and therefore he received help from the Lord.  We will all go through hard times in our life and we feel like giving up on God sometimes.  When we go through hard times, we can go to God and we can praise Him.  In 2 Corinthians 4:8 we learn that we are not destroyed.  We may and will let God down, but God will never let us down.

What David did in his low times:

  1. He will bless the Lord at all times.

He was going to praise God; he was not going to let someone else do it for him.

It was a personal blessing.  He praised God.

It was a persistent blessing.

David praised God from his mouth.

Psalm 40:3

  1. He will boast in the Lord

He boasted in the glory of who God is – v. 3

He gloried in His name – Isaiah 9:6

He boasted in God’s nature of all that He had done in his life.

He boasted in the goodness of the Lord – v. 8

God supply his needs – vs. 9-10

God shadows over us – v. 15

He knew God was watching over him

God is very near to him – v. 18

God sheltered him – v. 20

He boasted in the Lord for His grace – vs. 6, 8, 15, 17

The Lord heard his cry.

The Lord helped him – vs. 4, 6, 17, 19

The Lord delivered him continually.

  1. He beheld the beauty of the Lord – v.3

He magnified God in his life.

He magnified the beauty of the Word of God.

He magnified the beauty of God’s ways.

He magnified the blessings of the Lord.

He magnified the benefits of what he had.

When you go through hard times, what do you do?  Do you allow the hard times, those difficult times to overtake you; or do you call upon God during those times?   When you go through hard times, you have a choice to make. You can look to God and praise Him, boast of Him, and behold His beauty; or you can let the difficult time keep you down and discouraged. What will your choice be?  Hard times can be a time of joy, or a time or sadness.  You make the hard times what they are.  Choose to make the hard times joyful.  Bless the Lord during your hard times.  Praise Him for all He has done in your life.  If you do not praise God with your mouth, how will others know what God is doing in your life? Boast of the Lord during your difficult days.  Take glory in who He is, what all that He has done.  Look around you and see the blessings of God in your life.  He supplies your every need.  He sees and knows exactly what you are going through.  Yes, we go through trials and hard times, but God is right there beside us and He shelters us, and whispers “peace be still.”  When you are going through a hard time, take a minute and just behold the beauty of the Lord.  Pull out your magnifying glass and look at Him, look at His Word.  When you are going through hard times, respond like David did.  Just praise Him anyway!
